Minaya Signs 4-year Extension

minaya.jpgAccording to Buster Olney of ESPN.com, the Mets have extended Omar Minaya’s current contract. Minaya will allegedly receive a 4-year extension. Minaya has been with the team since the beginning of the 2005 season.

To add my own personal opinion, I love the move. Omar has done nothing but make big moves. I’ll admit, he has made some stupid moves like the 4-year deal to Luis Castillo, but think of all the great things. Just to thrown some names out there, Xavier Nady, Oliver Perez, John Maine, Johan Santana, Duaner Sanchez(pre car accident), Paul LoDuca(06 season) and I’m sure I missed some. Anyway great job by the Mets giving the man who changed the face of this franchise an extension.

“Ya Gotta Believe!”

Cubs 9, Mets 5

The NL Central Champion Chicago Cubs came to Shea for the final regular season series between the two foes. The Cubs got to rookie Jon Niese early and tagged the Mets mediocre pen for 3 more runs to pad there lead. I know many have said the offense needs to score more “tack on” runs but 5 runs a game sound pretty good.

Scoring Summary:

  • Reed Johnson singled home Mark DeRosa with 2 outs in the top of the second.
  • The home half of the second, Carlos Delgado would come home on a “heads up” play on a wild pitch by Jason Marquis. That would tie the game at 1 all.
  • The next inning, Daniel Murphy doubled home Jose Reyes giving the Mets a 2-1 lead.
  • Reed Johson would hurt the Mets again in the top of the 4th. He singled home Geovany Soto with a line drive to Carlos Beltran. Eventually, the bases would be loaded for Jason Marquis who would hit a grand slam off Jon Niese. It was after this that Jerry Manuel would pull Niese going to Nelson Figueroa. New pitcher, similar results. Derrek Lee would hit a solo shot giving the Cubs a 7-2 lead.
  • In the top of the 5th, Jason Marquis would ground out to David Wright but Felix Pie would come into score.
  • David Wright hit a 2-run home run just over Alfonso Soriano’s glove cutting the Cubby lead to 8-4.
  • Luis Ayala would give up another run in the 9th, on a Felix Pie single.
  • Carlos Delgado would score in the home half on a Carlos Beltran ground out but one run wasn’t gonna do it.

Game Notes:

  • Very similar to Niese’s first career start, he pitched well until the 4th inning. He would never escape the 4th either time.
  • Carlos Beltran has a bruised knee after hitting into the wall making a nice catch. Beltran has been quoted as wanting to play and will most likely play tonight.
  • Lou Pinella wanted to run a hit and run with Mark DeRosa and Reed Johnson on base. DeRosa ran but Johnson missed the sign and it cost him. Sweet Lou took him out for Felix Pie.
  • Kudos to Geovany Soto. I already knew what a great player he was but yesterday shocked me. He knew he got into an out but still ran the ball out hard. I love players that hustle.
  • Felix Pie fouled a ball off right back into his face and was shacken up a bit. He would stay in the game but something that ammused me was what Lou did. He wrapped his arm around him for a moment, and the crowd all went “aww”. It was very funny from a fans perspective because I have never seen a crowd go “aww” like that. Very funny but glad to see Pie was ok.

Looking Ahead:

Johan Santana will try to stop the bleeding tonight as the Mets play the Cubs in game 2.
