Many Phillie fans say they don't want to hear about New York and they don't care about the Mets. However, I must contest. I'm a frequent poster on the Mets Message Boards hosted by MLB.com and they just can't get enough of us. Even when the Mets aren't playing the Phils and won't be until next year, their bragging on our board. That gets me mad but this gets me absolutley insane.

In an article in the NY Daily News, Bill Price writes about the new Phillies rally cry, "Ya Gotta Believe". Yes that is right, they are using the Mets solgan of the 1973 Miracle Mets, said by the great Tug McGraw, while a Met not a Phillie.

He may have played for the Phillies in the 80's, but "Ya Gotta Believe" has always been a Mets thing. McGraw never said it while on the Phils, just the Mets.

The Daily News has given these three possible explinations.

"1. Those fans are so clever, they knew doing this would tick off already-disgusted Mets fans even more.

2. The fans are in awe of the Met franchise, and figure a little Met magic will help them finally win something.

3. These fans aren't the tastiest cakes on the shelf, and therefore thinking up something on their own is virtually impossible."

I like the Phillies, their an easy team to root for and I hope they win the World Series. But this has gone to far. I guess I must agree with all of the explinations.

Former Mets manager Willie Randolph is apparently getting looks from the Mets rivals the Washington Nationals. Randolph would not be hired as a manger but as a coach but a coach on manager Manny Acta's coaching staff.

The Sporting News quoted Randolph as follows;

"They've reached out to say, "we're interested." This is just the early stages."

Randolph would most likely rather be a manager than a bench coach. Acta was once Randolph's third base coach with the Mets. Teams interested in the former Mets skipper are the Nationals, Brewers and possibly the Mariners.

I think that Randolph should manage again, just not for the Mets. I can see him as the Yankees manager possibly in a few years. My one pet peeve with Randolph was that he tried to make the Mets the Yankees of the National League. Coming over from a bench coach position under Joe Torre, he brought over many philosophies that the Yankees used. Like no facial hair and no music in the clubhouse. The Mets are not the Yankees and they never will be.

When Jerry took over, he lifted some of Willie's rules immediately but still held the clubhouse together. He loosed up the previously tight and strict Randolph clubhouse.

Other than that I really liked Willie, he brought a winning atmosphere to Flushing, and I credit him with that.

Mets RP and future inmate Ambiorix Burgos surrendered himself to the police in the Dominican Republic for killing two women in a hit and run. Burgos will spend the next three months in jail while he awaits a trial. His cousin, who was driving with him in the passenger seat turned himself in saying that he commited the crime trying to save Ambiorix's career. However an eye witness stated that Burgos was in the car and thus Burgos is being charged, rightfully so.

In a post for Big League Stew, 'Duk has posted a picture of Ambiorix Burgos being taken into custody by Dominican police officers. He was wearing a Chicago White Sox Cap with a shirt reading "I GOT QUACK QUACK QUACK". Not to mention a smile on his face and an expensive watch on his wrist.

I have a couple of problems with this picture of Burgos. First off why is he wearing a Chicago White Sox hat? You would think that a man being taken into custody would wear something more professional rather than a high class "gangster". I've seen most professionals taken into custody wear something more professional not to hurt their image. And I wonder why a man that killed two women a week ago would be smiling when being taken to a miserable place where he wil likely be spending a lot of time.

I feel bad for Ambiorix's carrer now being ruined and I'm glad he did the right thing and turned himself in. Burgos was traded for now Royals pitcher Brian Bannister. Bannister hasn't had a great carrer so far in Kansas City but he has been healthier than Burgos who missed all of this year due to elbow surgery.

What are the chances?

The chances would be better without the presence of Castillo. When Jeff
Wilpon mentioned creating "addition by subtraction" last week, I
suspect many minds connected those words to Castillo. From what I'm
told, Hudson, a free agent, yearns to play for the Mets. I can't be
sure of that. I don't know him. But what I know of him would suit the
Mets' purposes quite well. Whether or not Hudson wants to play at Citi
Field, money will be a factor, and the $18 million owed Castillo can
make it an issue."

I would love for the Mets to bring in the O-Dog. He is a scrappy player and I feel he would make a great fit in a Mets uniform.

The only problem is Luis Castillo and Daniel Murphy. Murphy's situation is actually a positive. Luis Castillo is owed 18 million and is currently filling up the 2B spot. Jerry Manuel said in his radio interview yesterday on WFAN that Luis Castillo did not hold that spot in the lineup.

Now for the good problem. Daniel Murphy was supposed to play 2B in the Arizona Fall League and may play 2nd next season. Also in the WFAN interview, Jerry said that he wants to start Daniel Murphy just he doesn't have a place to play.
Ever since Omar has been a general manager with the Expos, he has wanted to land Manny Ramirez. I would like the move.

Another quote from the report included names like Ryan Church, Luis Castillo and Aaron Heilman.

"The Mets have a group of players they feel will play much better outside of New York. Sabathia may be on the Mets radar. The report says how Sabathia would enjoy being in a rotation which includes Mike Pelfrey, John Maine and last but certinly not least, Johan Sanatana.

Including the Mets, the Yankees and the Angels are in the market for C.C. Many experts say the Yankees are best to sign the 28-year old lefty just becasue they are desperate for starting pitching.

However the Angels may have the advantage. Sabathia was born in California and is a West coast kind of guy. He may have played in the middle of the country in Cleveland and Milwaukee, but he would love to play in his hometown. He had this to say on New York:

"I like it there, but we'll have to see what the direction the teams are going and would my family be unconfortable being on a whole other coast? We'll see."

That quote helps and hurts the Mets. If helps becasue he says in the quote that he wants to see the direction of the teams. If he looks at the Mets, he sees a rotation like any other. Look at it this way.

Johan Santana

C.C. Sabathia

Mike Pelfrey

John Maine

Free agent/ Jon Niese/ Bobby Parnell

That roation looks absolutley dominating to me. You got two stoppers at the top and emerging young starts in Mike Pelfrey and John Maine. The 5th spot could be filled by rookies Jon Niese, Bobby Parnell or a free agent.

Now for the bad news. C.C. also says in the quote that he would want to see what his family wants to do. I'm sure that means west coast. So the Angels may look like the perfect fit. They have a good team and most importanty, it's on the west coast.

So will the Mets be C.C.ing much of C.C. next year? Maybe, maybe not, I think C.C. will be wearing a halo next year.
Angel's closer and soon to be free agent Fransisco Rodriguez, K-Rod, may have dropped his price a bit. Friday night he allowed the go-ahead two run homer to J.D. Drew in Game 2 of the ALDS. Now the question at hand is did his price just drop?

Many say his agent is asking for 5 years 75 million which is a helluva lot of money. The Mets already have a giant payroll and if they do sign K-Rod and there is another Metless October, heads will roll. Were talking big managerial shake ups, roster changes and general manager moves.

J.D. Drew could have really helped the Mets. Although K-Rod broke the single season save record this season, that one home run could have cost him some cash.

Now it's time to talk Brian Fuentes. It was rumored the free agent was going to be traded this All-Star break but was kept on the Rockies. He is going to cost much less and probally isn't going to get the lengthy deal like K-Rod because of his age. I estimate around 3-4 years 30-35 million.

Personally I feel the Mets should go after Brian Fuentes rather than Francisco Rodriguesz. If K-Rod is going to cost less I say take him but as of now Fuentes is my guy. Francisco has a very violent motion and I feel he will heart himself eventually. Fuentes will cost less but will not be as effective. However I fell in the long run Fuentes is the better choice.
Today the Mets held a conference introducing new manager Jerry Manuel. I have taken some notes, and have written down some quotes for those of you that did not hear it.

Notes:

According to Jerry, the Mets clubhouse has leaders, mentioning Carlos Delgado. Manuel said that Carlos showed, "tremendous leadership down the stretch."

On the offense, Jerry said that the Angels were the model team. He said that the Mets need to, "They need to put the game ahead of the individual performance." Basically stating that it's not how many hits you have, it's when you hit them.

He can't wait to run his first Spring Training.

Jerry has not watched any of the teams in the playoffs, he said he has been at Home Depot imporving his new house.

Quotes:

"I couldn't tell you how much is salvageable and how much is not. I do know that I've been without a couple pair of shoes. Our job is to get people back in their roles that we think that we
signed them up for, and then evaluate from that point of view. But to
put them in roles that they're not accustomed to is sometimes an unfair
evaluation."

"You don't see a lot of guys that have statistical numbers play well in these championship series. What you see is usually the little second baseman or somebody like that
carries off the MVP trophy that nobody expected him to do. That's
because he's comfortable in playing that form of baseball, so therefore
when the stage comes, it's not a struggle for him."

"We have to put a value on say, moving a runner over. We have to put a
value on getting a bases on balls. We have to put a value on infield
back, (getting a) ground ball that's sufficient to score a run. Those types of things have to be accented in order for us, in my opinion, to kind of get to the next level."

"That's not really how it works, and that's what we have to get away
from. And that's going to have to be a different mind-set of the team
in going forward. We must win and we must know how to win rather than
win because we have statistical people. We have to win because we have
baseball players that know and can understand the game."

"You get so many statistical people together, they put so many stats on
paper, and they say, well, if you do this and you score this many runs,
you do that many times, you'll be in the playoffs."

"We have to grow from every time that we get as close as we get and
don't make it, and we have to review and kind of marinate on why we
don't make it."

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the New York Mets have offered Jerry Manuel a two year managing contract with a club option for 2011.

Since Manuel took over as interim manager of the Mets after the firing of Willie Randolph, the Mets went 55-38 under Jerry. Prior to that, the Mets were 34-35.

Most of today there was news that Jerry declined an offer and Bobby V was available and could manage. I expected the Wilpons not to bring in Valentine because they got rid of him in the first place.

I like Jerry a lot and I think this was the right move.
In a conference call with Mets ownership, Omar Minaya was offered, and accepted a a 3-year contract extension. The news was reported a week ago but was not officially announced. The extension brings Omar back until the end of 2012 with club options for the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

I have highlighted some information that was said during the conferance call.

Minaya stated that he is trying to bring back Jerry Manuel next year. Word is he was offered a 2-year deal but never returned the call.

Omar said that he talked to Carlos Delgado's agent about returning for the 2009 season. His exact words were "probally looking to."

On the Mets bullpen situation; "One of the top areas we need to address is the bullpen and the closer. There's only a few guys in the game what we say can, 'lock-out an
inning,' so we'll have to look in the market place, or look internally,
because for a championship team that is very important."

I like the move to bring Delgado back. Young options like Evans possibly Carp aren't ready to take over yet. One more year would be great.

I really want to bring back Jerry. I liked the way he loosed the atmosphere in the clubhouse. However I don't like the way he managed the bullpen this year but really he had no options. No one in that bullpen proved that they can get right handed and lefthanded batters. Hopefully Omar will bring him in some relivers who can get both hitters out.
